What is an orthodontic emergency?

Let’s say you are enjoying a pleasant meal with your family, and suddenly you hear a pop inside your mouth after you take a bite and the archwire snaps or breaks. This occurrence can lead to intense pain when it impinges on your gums or cheeks. When such a situation arises, it constitutes an orthodontic emergency.

Orthodontic treatments can cause some discomfort but never lead to intense pain. If you are experiencing throbbing pain or exceptional discomfort, it is a sign to schedule an urgent appointment with our Orthodontist in London. If you end up being in such a situation, call us and schedule an orthodontic emergency appointment with our specialist orthodontist to get it treated, as it can significantly impact your treatment’s progress.

Snapped wire

Traditional braces or self-ligating braces have archwires that are used to move your teeth into the desired position. Very rarely, these wires can break or snap during eating or in general. These snapped wires can be a nuisance as they can impinge on your gums or cheeks and cause trauma and lead to intense pain; they also disturb your treatment’s progress. Due to these reasons, snapped wires have to be replaced with urgency. Contact us, and we will schedule an emergency appointment for you. Our specialist orthodontist will replace the archwire so your treatment can be completed without discomfort and you are saved from any trauma to your mouth.

De-bonded brackets

Braces consist of brackets placed on the front of the backside of your teeth and glued with the help of dental cement. The dental cement usually does not snap, but on certain occasions or chewing on hard food can de-bond these brackets. These de-bonded brackets are tiny and can even be ingested. De-bonded brackets also hamper your treatment. If you are in such a situation, make sure you remove the de-bonded broken bracket from your mouth and call us and schedule an urgent appointment with our excellent Orthodontist to replace it.

Broken fixed retainers

After completing your orthodontic treatment, you may be prescribed a fixed retainer to maintain your teeth’ corrected position. If your retainer gets broken or dislodged, inspect it thoroughly and avoid eating any sticky or hard food substances. These retainers also have wires and other components, which, if broken, can cause trauma to the mouth. Retainers are given to make sure your tooth positions do not change; a broken retainer means now your teeth are free to move back into their former positions. It is because of these reasons that a broken fixed retainer should be replaced with swiftness to avoid any relapse.

Broken removable retainers and aligners

You may have to wear a retainer at night for some time after your teeth have been moved to make sure they do not move again. A broken removable retainer needs to be replaced with a newer one to ensure that the teeth do not relapse to their former positions. Broken aligners need to be replaced with new ones with urgency. Not wearing them even for 2-3 days will start moving your teeth to their former position as teeth tend to go back to their former place until the bone formation in the newer position has not been completed.

Loose or broken rubber bands

In traditional metal braces or ceramic braces, rubber or elastic bands are the components that apply forces to move your teeth. If they are broken, the force’s application is disturbed, and your teeth may end up moving to other places and may also cause intense pain. This necessitates an urgent appointment with our Orthodontist near you in London.

Mouth ulcers and soreness

You may experience some discomfort during your initial days of getting started on orthodontic treatment. However, experiencing prolonged soreness in your mouth, pain or getting mouth ulcers is not normal and is considered a complication requiring treatment. Rarely, the brackets or the wires can cause ulcers on your tongue, gums and cheeks. This can cause pain and make everyday activities like chewing and talking a harrowing experience. If this happens to you, schedule an appointment with our Orthodontist in London to get it checked. They will prescribe you some medications and ointments for the ulcer and, in some cases, even replace the brackets or the wires.
